Bulgarian fruit and vegetable harvests rose in 2024

Harvested fruit and vegetable volumes increased in Bulgaria in 2024, according to Eurostat. The country harvested slightly more than 527,000 tons of vegetables, including melons, a 12% rise compared to 470,000 tons in 2023. Tomato output increased by 11% to 128,000 tons, while carrot production rose 3% to 10,000 tons. Onion volumes, however, fell 10% to 35,000 tons.

Across the European Union, total vegetable production also increased, but at a lower rate. The EU harvested 62.2 million tons in 2024, up 6% from 58.8 million tons the previous year. Tomato production in the EU rose 5% to 16.8 million tons, carrot output increased 6% to 4.7 million tons, and onion production was up 11% to 7.0 million tons.

Fruit production in Bulgaria, excluding citrus, grapes, and strawberries, grew by 14.5% year-on-year. Almost 205,000 tons were harvested in 2024, compared to 179,000 tons in 2023. In contrast, EU fruit production in the same categories decreased 2%, with 24.3 million tons harvested.
