Ukraine melon prices rise as watermelon prices drop

This week, melon prices in Ukraine have increased sharply, while watermelon prices have continued to decline, according to analysts from the EastFruit project.

Melons rose in price by an average of 40% compared to last week. Farmers attribute this growth mainly to a seasonal reduction in supply. Many farms in the southern regions have almost finished harvesting early melon varieties, while later varieties will not be ready until the end of the month. Producers also report quality issues caused by unfavourable weather.

Wholesale batches of melons are currently being shipped directly from the field at 26–40 UAH/kg (US$0.63–0.97/kg). At present, melons are being sold at an average of 2.9 times the price recorded during the same period last year. Analysts explain that the difference is linked to reduced production resulting from adverse weather conditions.

In contrast, the watermelon market is experiencing downward pressure. Improved weather conditions have allowed producers to resume harvesting, leading to increased supply. Farmers note that the market is dominated by large-calibre fruit, which is in low demand, limiting sales to wholesale buyers and retail chains.

Prices for watermelons have fallen to 5–15 UAH/kg (US$0.12–0.36/kg), averaging 31% lower than at the end of last week. Hot weather has accelerated ripening, while drought in the southern regions has lowered fruit quality, further weighing on prices.

Despite the decline, current watermelon prices remain on average 78% higher than in mid-August 2024. Industry experts say price increases are only possible for top-quality fruit, which is limited, while prices for watermelons above 5 kg are expected to continue falling as farmers look to clear volumes quickly.
