French figs are becoming rarer on the shelves this season, and prices are soaring, reaching €7.50 [8.84 USD] per kilo, compared with €6.80 [8.02 USD] last year. This increase is thought to be linked to the heatwave and the diseases that have weakened the orchards.
According to a grower in the Gard department, the harvest is two to three weeks behind schedule. The fruits are smaller than usual, and they are all ripening at the same time, which is complicating the harvest. As a result, some of the figs cannot be harvested, and losses could affect 30 to 40% of this year's production.
