By the end of September, Moldovan canning companies have nearly completed their procurement plans for plums intended for puree and juice production, according to Logos Press, citing the fruit and vegetable processors' association Speranța Con.
Industry representatives say production could potentially be doubled in the short term, but the main challenge would be finding reliable buyers for the additional processed products.
This season, processors paid farmers between 4–5 MDL/kg (€0.20-0.25) for plums, compared to 2.5–3 MDL/kg (€0.13-0.15) last year. The higher prices reflect both stronger demand in European markets, where late frosts significantly reduced local harvests, and a relatively good domestic crop.
Experts currently estimate Moldova's 2025 plum harvest at 80,000–90,000 tons.
