Apples, pears and stone fruit drive exports

Shepparton growers strengthen trade links in Asia

Greater Shepparton's fruit sector is looking to expand export opportunities, with regional growers and representatives meeting with international buyers and trade partners in early September 2025. The delegation included Fruit Growers Victoria, Greater Shepparton City Council, and more than 25 local growers and supply chain members.

Greater Shepparton produces more than US$729 million in agricultural output annually, with fruit production making up nearly half of this total. Apples, pears, and stone fruit are central to the region's exports, and with Australian apples expected to regain access to the Chinese market in 2026, growers see opportunities for renewed trade.

As part of the programme, the group visited Shenzhen, China, for the Victorian Fruit Growers Network event in partnership with Global Victoria. The visit enabled discussions with Chinese industry representatives about strengthening trade links and identifying new channels for regional fruit.

Mayor Shane Sali said the meetings confirmed the role of horticulture in the region's economy and provided opportunities to maintain international connections. Michael Crisera of Fruit Growers Victoria added that presenting the Goulburn Valley's fruit to overseas buyers allowed growers to monitor market trends and evaluate potential export markets.

These activities followed Shepparton's participation in Asia Fruit Logistica, where the region was represented with a dedicated trade stand.
