Daniele Neri Vivai

September can be a good month for peaches and nectarines

Who said that the production of peaches and nectarines has to end in late August or early September in northern Italy? Daniele Veri Vivai offers late varieties that combine size and good flavour, with harvesting that lasts until the end of September and even until early October for some selections still on trial.

"We are currently harvesting Romagna Mia nectarines, i.e., white-fleshed nectarines with a red colour in the central part of the pulp," explains Francesco Neri, 23, who works alongside his brother Federico (24) and their father Daniele. "Quality is excellent, as is size: just like the entire series of our peaches and nectarines, Romagna Mia is characterised by its large size. Obviously, it requires careful management when it comes to pruning and thinning."

"Having peaches and nectarines that produce in September opens up new scenarios. I am convinced that there is always room for fruit that is good to eat. It is we producers who often no longer grow with those who have to eat in mind. Prices are high, with a very interesting gross saleable production."

The peach and nectarine campaign has been positive. "We will soon start harvesting Romagna Late. In addition, we are testing several selections that will complete the calendar in the medium and late period."

"Quality is made in the fields and, commercially, you cannot offer consumers peaches or nectarines without flavour and identity. People are tired of fruit that is beautiful to look at, but questionable from an organoleptic point of view. It is high time someone realised this: a real turnaround is needed when it comes to both varieties and the planting and cultivation methods," says Daniele Neri.
