Tesco leads in British apple sales, Sainsbury’s tops pears

British Apples & Pears Limited (BAPL), the UK's top fruit grower association, has announced its 2025 awards based on sales of British apples and pears to supermarkets from September 2024 to August 2025.

Tesco has been named British Apple Retailer of the Year after selling 34,043 tonnes of British dessert apples during the period. Aldi followed with 30,130 tonnes.

Asda received the award for Most Improved British Apple Retailer, with sales more than doubling year-on-year, from 5,555 tonnes in 2023/24 to 11,427 tonnes in 2024/25.

According to BAPL data, several supermarkets sold a higher proportion of British apples compared with their grocery market share (GMS). Aldi sold 20.2% of all British apples versus its 10.8% GMS, Lidl 14.4% versus 8.3%, Sainsbury's 17% versus 15%, M&S 5.2% versus 3.9%, and Waitrose 4.6% versus 4.4%. Tesco, Morrisons, and Asda all underperformed against their market share. Tesco's sales were 5.5 percentage points below its GMS, Morrisons ' were 4.9 points below, and Asda's were 4.1 points below.

In the pear category, Sainsbury's has been named British Pear Retailer of the Year for 2025, selling 5,289 tonnes of British pears — the highest of any UK supermarket. Sainsbury's also won the award for Most Improved British Pear Retailer, with sales rising by 905 tonnes from the previous season.

Aldi recorded strong growth in pear sales compared with the previous year, while Lidl came second in the pear sales volume table, also outperforming its grocery market share. BAPL said the awards are intended to recognise retailers' performance in British apple and pear sales during the 2024/25 season.
