Harvesting of the Sweet Sensation pear is underway, with growers expecting volumes of just over 6 million kilos this season.
According to Inspector Co van Wiggen, the fruit size is slightly smaller than in previous years, but colour is reported as good, and most pears fall within retail size specifications. Sales are scheduled to begin in the second week of October, with Germany remaining the largest market. Demand is also reported from Italy, Eastern Europe, and the UK, where the variety is sold as "ready to eat."

Since its introduction to the European market in 2010, Sweet Sensation has built a steady retail presence. Sales manager Ton van Wiggen said, "The variety may not be a yield booster in the orchard, but it is a taste booster for consumers. This enables us to offer growers good returns per hectare and achieve premium prices in the market. This year, we aim for a price that reflects the increased costs across the entire chain."

Last year, the pear was awarded the Superior Taste Award by a panel of chefs and sommeliers. The recognition has been used in the "Taste the moment" campaign, which highlights the flavour and versatility of the variety. Category Development Manager at The Greenery, Renske Hartensveld, said the award would be used particularly in Germany to support retail programmes.

The Greenery has set up a working group where growers and the company collaborate to improve profitability. Chair of the group, Lena Zevenbergen, noted that demand continues to exceed supply and interest in new plantings is rising. Head of Fruit at The Greenery, Aad van Dijk, said the organisation aims to increase volume in line with market demand.
