Markus Tscholl, coordinator of Asta Frutta Alto Adige in Italy:

"We are now harvesting Golden and Red Delicious apples after completing Gala"

"A few days ago, our producers began harvesting Golden and Red Delicious apples in the valley. The yield forecast looks good, and the opening prices at the auction are similar to those in 2024," says Markus Tscholl, Asta Frutta Alto Adige coordinator, regarding the apple harvest in South Tyrol.

"First, the Gala summer apple deserves mention for its abundant harvest and exceptional fruit quality, attributed to favorable summer conditions. Moderate daytime temperatures combined with significant nighttime cooling promoted strong pigmentation. Market prices remained stable, holding at 2024 levels."

"The apples currently being harvested are of satisfactory size and color, aided by the early September temperature drop. Yields appear good, though a full assessment will only be possible at the end of the harvest."

Apple prices would be favorable for producers if not for the elevated production costs, which continue to erode margins. Over the past four years, costs have multiplied, while prices received by producers have only increased marginally."

"Our clientele is Italian, but not exclusively so," clarifies Tscholl, who has 33 years of experience in the auction business. "For instance, we have buyers in Germany, Spain, and Eastern Europe." At present, the 15-kilogram crate is the most popular format, but as the season progresses, demand for apples in bins is expected to increase.

Asta Frutta Alto Adige has about the same number of customers and producers. There were 550 registered buyers and 760 producers, respectively. These producers own over 900 hectares of land and are expected to produce around 45,000 tons of apples.
