Epping site marks decade of Melbourne market trade

The Melbourne Market and National Flower Centre, Victoria's wholesale hub for fresh produce and cut flowers, marked 10 years at its Epping location with a community gathering on August 28, 2025. The event featured speeches, shared stories, and a large cake decorated with fruit, vegetables, and flowers.

The market first relocated from West Melbourne in August 2015. Trade at the old site ended on Friday, 28 August, and resumed at Epping 48 hours later. The move was part of a government plan announced in 2004, with construction of the new 67-hectare site beginning in 2012.

The design of the Epping facility included sustainability and efficiency measures such as a central cooling plant, on-site recycling transfer station, and separated vehicle and pedestrian pathways. Epping was chosen for its proximity to major freeways and available land, and the relocation allowed the market's footprint to more than double. The surrounding region has since developed into a hub for food, beverage, and fibre manufacturing.

Over the past decade, the Melbourne Market Authority has added undercover parking and on-site warehousing to meet changing industry needs. In addition, more than 5,400 solar panels were installed to help offset tenant electricity costs. Recently, plans were announced for two new warehouse pads on the outer ring of the site, adding 10,244 square metres to the current 93,000 square metres of warehouse space.

The market continues to play a role in supplying fruit, vegetables, and flowers across Victoria, while adapting infrastructure to industry demands.
