The 2025-2026 cold season in Cuba began in early September across most agricultural enterprises, with a planting target of 517,000 hectares of crops, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG). The program is considered central to supporting the national food supply.
Yohan Garcia, Director General of Agriculture at MINAG, said that farmers' work will be combined with science, technology, and available resources. Priority will be given to potatoes, alongside rustic crops such as sweet potatoes, cassava, plantains, and taro.
The campaign, which runs until February 2026, will also include root vegetables, greens, grains, and fruit trees. Authorities reported that biological controls will be applied for pest and disease management, organic fertilizers will be used for soil treatment, and animal traction will support land preparation and crop cultivation.
Sector authorities emphasized that efficient management will be needed to increase yields under conditions of limited inputs.
The Agricultural, Forestry, and Tobacco Workers' Union will contribute volunteer labor during peak periods such as harvest. State workers, cooperatives, private farmers, and youth groups are also expected to participate through organized mobilization.
