Sydney Markets marks 50 years at Flemington

Sydney Markets Limited is marking 50 years since opening at Flemington on 12 September 1975. To note the milestone, the company is recognising traders who have operated at the site since its first day.

Of the original tenants, 39 continue to trade at the markets, known informally as the "Class of 75." Each year, more than 2.5 million tonnes of fruit, vegetables, and flowers are traded at Sydney Markets, supplying New South Wales and the ACT. The facility is the largest wholesale produce and community market in Australia.

Some of the original traders reflected on the anniversary. John Antico of Antico International recalled the opening day: "We looked at these modules here, we said, oh, my God, how are we ever going to fill those." He also described working with Qantas in developing air freight exports of produce.© Sydney Markets

Another trader, Don Varacalli, said: "I left school at 16 years old and I went to work in the market. I got my first job in the market. My job is selling fruit and vegetables to the public. I've been doing that for 50 years."

The market's management said the anniversary highlights the continuity of its traders and businesses since 1975, while also pointing to the involvement of new generations of growers and traders.
