In the rural area of Emilia, in northern Italy, Marco Anzola's agricultural farm in the town of Boretto, in the province of Reggio Emilia, located along the banks of the Po River, is charting a clear course toward zero-residue agriculture. The farm, known for its high-quality oxheart tomatoes, which are grown using a strategy based on ozone, aims to achieve two main goals: raising disinfection standards and drastically reducing the use of pesticides.
"Our decision was driven by the need to ensure a healthier environment for our crops and to produce a residue-free product," Anzola explains. "Ozone appeared to be the most effective solution, and we were reassured by the positive experiences of others in the sector."
The company's strategy is based on dual use of the technology. First, ozonized water is used for irrigation in greenhouses, above-soil cultivation, and open fields. "The advantages are huge," Anzola continues. "In addition to its disinfecting properties, the unstable ozone molecule releases oxygen directly into the substrate, promoting root oxygenation. This leads to tangible benefits for the plant's overall health."

The second pillar is the implementation of gaseous sanitization to purify the environment. "Before each production cycle, we seal and disinfect the greenhouse with gaseous ozone. This method eliminates bacteria on surfaces such as tarpaulins and the exterior of tubes. This allows us to start with a clean and safe environment."
The results were not long in coming. "The most evident transformation has been the substantial decrease in the utilization of plant protection products, particularly those aimed at regulating fungal diseases. Prevention has become a fundamental part of our work. A healthier environment results in economic savings and, above all, stronger, more resilient plants."

We've received positive feedback not only from the industry but also from the market. "Our employees have observed that the plants exhibit greater vitality from the very beginning. "From a business perspective, promoting the use of a technology like ozone, which is already established in the medical field, is seen as a novel and organic strategy that offers genuine added benefits."
Looking to the future, Anzola has no doubts. "If I had to make new investments, I would incorporate ozone technology 100%. Healthy plants produce more and defend themselves better against diseases, bacteria, and insects. It is an investment that pays for itself," he concludes.
