Netherlands doubles strawberry harvest despite smaller area

In 2024, more than 86 million kilograms of strawberries were harvested in the Netherlands, double the volume of 2010, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The increase is mainly due to higher production from greenhouses and polytunnels, while the total cultivation area for strawberries fell by over 15% to 1,400 hectares in the same period.

Strawberries grown under glass and in tunnels represented three-quarters of the total harvest in 2024, compared with half in 2010. The area used for this type of production more than doubled over the period, reaching 602 hectares in 2024. Output from greenhouse and tunnel production more than tripled during the same timeframe, reaching 66 million kilograms.

Field-grown strawberries were cultivated on 758 hectares in 2024, nearly 44% less than in 2010. Despite this reduction in area, the harvest from field production declined by only 4.2% compared to 2010, with more than 20 million kilograms harvested in 2024.

No production figures are yet available for 2025, but provisional data on cultivation areas have been released. In 2025, the area for field-grown strawberries decreased further to 724 hectares, down 4.5% from 2024. The area for strawberries under glass and in tunnels also decreased, by 1.8% to 591 hectares compared to the previous year.
