AD Ports Group rolls out LEO satellite services

AD Ports Group has begun the rollout of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services across its global fleet and terminal operations. The initiative is part of its digitalisation programme, aimed at enabling real-time data for vessels and ensuring stable connectivity for ports and terminals.

The global rollout started this month following agreements signed with two LEO satellite service providers. The phased deployment is underway on several vessels within the Group's 270-ship fleet. LEO services provide high-speed, low-latency communications to support real-time vessel tracking, predictive maintenance, and route optimisation.

According to Mohamed Jamal-Eddine, Group Chief Information Officer, AD Ports Group: "LEO satellite connectivity serves as the digital backbone that unlocks the full potential of our technology ecosystem. With high-speed, low-latency communications, we can deploy advanced AI applications for predictive maintenance, dynamic route optimisation, and automated cargo tracking in real-time. This is not just about faster connectivity; it's about creating a smart, resilient infrastructure that maintains business continuity even in the most remote areas. By integrating this connectivity with our IoT sensors, smart port platforms, and AI analytics, we are building a truly connected supply chain that provides unparalleled visibility and control to our customers and partners."

At sea, LEO-supported systems will enable applications such as voyage planning, fuel optimisation, and safety monitoring. At the port level, the rollout will cover AD Ports Group's 34 terminals across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and Southwest Asia. The technology is expected to provide continuous communications in remote locations and during critical operations, while also strengthening cargo monitoring and emergency response coordination.

The initiative is linked to AD Ports Group's wider digitalisation strategy, which includes smart port platforms, supply chain integration, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. With LEO connectivity as the foundation, these systems will have increased capability for real-time insights and automation across operations.
