Vietnam Long Thanh airport construction stays on track

Construction of Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai province is moving forward, with calibration flights for Runway 1 scheduled for September 25 and a technical test flight planned for December 19.

During an inspection visit, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha was informed that land clearance for the airport has reached 100 per cent, with 4,946.45 hectares recovered. An additional 126.13 hectares for two connecting roads (T1 and T2) have also been handed over to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

Sub-project 1, which covers state management headquarters, has completed structural work, with interior finishing underway and completion set for December 31, 2025. Sub-project 2 on air traffic management infrastructure is expected to be completed by September 2025, followed by equipment installation by December 2025. For sub-project 3 on essential airport facilities, three of the 15 contract packages are completed, while the others are still in progress.

Nguyen Tien Viet, deputy general director of ACV, reported that Connecting Road No.1 has been completed, while Road No.2 is more than 80 per cent finished and expected to conclude within the month. Within the airport, Runway 1 and associated taxiways are fully finished, and construction of Runway 3 is progressing. The terminal building's roofing has been completed, with glass installation expected to finish in September. Package 4.8, which covers internal roads and facilities, has been delayed by weather but is scheduled for completion this month.

Contractors are continuing work on aprons, internal traffic, fuel supply, technical utilities, and airport management systems. Efforts are underway to address issues caused by weather, site overlap, and logistical challenges.

To address congestion at the Dong Nai Bridge, ACV has proposed prioritizing freight along Ho Chi Minh City's newly opened Ring Road 3 and limiting container trucks to one lane on the bridge.

Deputy Minister of Construction Pham Minh Ha said most major obstacles have been resolved, with the Ministry of Construction coordinating with ACV, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, and Vietnam Airlines to maintain progress. Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha stressed the importance of adhering to the project timeline and called for immediate reporting of technical or administrative issues. He also underlined the need to prepare a fully trained operations team capable of managing security, airport operations, and customer service at 5-star international standards.

Dong Nai province has been tasked with finalizing resettlement planning and submitting proposals for financial adjustments to the Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister. Local authorities are also working with the Ministry of Construction on a broader development plan for Long Thanh, covering industrial zones, urban areas, services, and commerce.
