USDA deregulates Bayer MON 95379 corn

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has deregulated Bayer U.S. Crop Science's MON 95379 corn. This variety was developed through genetic engineering to resist feeding damage caused by pests such as fall armyworm, sugarcane borer, and corn earworm.

Following a comprehensive review, APHIS determined that MON 95379 is unlikely to pose a greater plant pest risk than non-modified corn varieties. As a result, it is no longer subject to regulations governing the introduction of certain genetically engineered organisms.

The decision was based on the evaluation of information and data submitted by Bayer in its petition for deregulation, available scientific data, and public comments received in response to prior notices announcing the petition and draft plant pest risk assessment (PPRA).

APHIS has published the Determination of Nonregulated Status, the final PPRA, and its response to public comments. These documents support the agency's review and analysis of potential plant pest impacts related to deregulating MON 95379 corn.
