German potato harvest up as Belarus faces shortage

In Germany, potato prices have fallen as the country records its largest harvest in 25 years, according to Deutsche Welle. The German Ministry of Agriculture reported that 13.4 million tons of potatoes will be harvested in 2025, 5.3 per cent more than last year and 17 per cent above the average of previous years. The last comparable harvest was in 2000.

This increase has led to lower consumer prices. In August, potatoes were 15 per cent cheaper in German supermarkets compared with 2024. Prices for new potatoes have also declined.

In contrast, Belarus has faced the opposite situation. In spring 2025, the country experienced a shortage of potatoes alongside a sharp increase in prices. Data from the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Belstat) showed that in 2024, potato costs rose by 31 per cent. By the end of August 2025, prices had increased by 22.3 per cent compared with December 2024. In June, the year-on-year increase reached 127.8 per cent.

Belarusian potato acreage has decreased substantially over the past two decades. The planted area has dropped from 467,000 hectares in 2005 to 141,000 hectares in 2024, more than a threefold reduction.
