Ukrainian onion prices drop with late harvest

Wholesale onion prices in Ukraine have fallen again since the start of the week, according to EastFruit analysts. Producers attribute the decline to the harvesting of late onion varieties in the northern and western regions, which has increased market supply.

As of today, wholesale onion prices on the domestic market range between UAH 6–13/kg (US$0.15–0.31/kg). This is on average 20 per cent lower than a week earlier. Market participants report that most sales currently involve onions unsuitable for long-term storage due to quality parameters.

At the same time, onions in Ukraine are trading on average 24 per cent cheaper than during the same period last year. However, industry representatives note that the harvest of high-quality onions has been sharply reduced this season as a result of unfavorable weather conditions.
