Chestnuts Australia Inc (CAI) has announced a formal industry vote on a proposal to amend the statutory levies and charges for the chestnut sector.
According to CAI President Brian Casey, discussions with growers led to a decision by the CAI Executive Committee to hold a ballot on the proposal, which was presented at the organisation's Annual General Meeting on 13 September 2025 in Wangaratta, Victoria.

The proposal seeks to increase the overall levy from 11 cents to 14 cents per kilogram at the first point of sale. Under the changes, the allocation for marketing would decrease from 5 cents to 2.5 cents, while research and development funding would rise from 4.5 cents to 11 cents. The Plant Health Australia (PHA) levy would be set at 0.5 cents, and the Emergency Plant Pest Response (EPPR) levy would be reduced from 1 cent to zero.
Casey said the adjustment is intended to provide greater funding for research and development activities.
Information packages are being distributed to chestnut growers and levy payers listed with CAI. Those who do not receive the material have been asked to contact the CAI administration office to obtain the documents and ballot paper.
The formal vote will commence on Monday, 22nd September 2025, and close on
Friday 31st October 2025.
