Start of the chestnut campaign

The harvesting and marketing of the Bouche de Betizac cultivar began a few days ago by chestnut specialist Mitica srl of Rioveggio (Bologna). As Gionatan Elmi explains, the chestnut campaign is currently showing good production and quality prospects.

"We are harvesting the Bouche de Betizac cultivar, and the chestnuts are of excellent size. They come from Piedmont and Campania at the moment. As for the market, we will have to wait and see, as we are awaiting developments," explains the company representative.

Compared to other years, production is a bit early. "Everything will of course depend on the weather in the coming weeks but, at the moment, we are a bit early. This year, we have further renewed our equipment with new packaging machines, so that we have greater efficiency and yields."

Mitica srl exports 40% of its product and works mostly with the Italian and foreign big retail chains, being one of the largest Italian companies in the sector. "We export a lot to Germany, Austria and Switzerland while, in Italy, we work with all the major big retail chains. As always, we can please both those who want high-end and those who prefer entry-level products, as carefully selected high quality is what characterises each batch."

One of Mitica srl's advantages is logistics: "We are located a few hundred metres from the Rioveggio motorway exit, not far from Bologna. We can deliver AxA in Italy, and AxB at most abroad. This is very important to ensure timely deliveries and product quality."

To achieve this quality, it is not possible to improvise. Mitica selects its suppliers and then follows a precise scanning of each batch in the warehouse, from pre-cleaning to sterilisation, through to calibration and packaging.
