Chestnut harvesting operations in Emilia Romagna will begin in four to five weeks. This year promises to be a positive one, although it will be possible to make a true assessment only when the burrs are open.

"Things are looking good," began Renzo Panzacchi, president of Associazione dei Castanicoltori dell'Emilia-Romagna. "We have estimated a 15% increase compared to 2024, and last season was a positive one, too. In the groves, trees are laden with burrs, and these are well distributed, which is indicative of a possible medium-large size."
The summer season hindered the proliferation of some insects, such as a species of cydia that attacks burrs. The August rain allowed the plants not to go into stress and thus increase the size of the chestnuts.
"The outlook is positive, now all we have to do is wait for the start of the harvesting period, which will presumably take place around 6-8 October, if the weather continues to help us out."
Chestnuts from the provinces of Bologna, Modena, and Reggio Emilia are promoted under the Marrone dell'Appenino Emiliano brand. "It was created to have greater continuity in supplies to the big retail chains. Supermarkets mostly ask for grades 70-80 and, thanks to the cooperation between production areas, we manage to have these grades available for 5-6 weeks. Otherwise, taken individually, each consortium would not be able to supply retailers with continuity for more than 2-3 weeks. This is a true example of how unity makes strength."
