The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) recently released trade numbers for June 2025, pegging U.S. pistachio exports at 27.7k metric tons (mt) for the month. This was 1.4k mt fewer than May 2025 (-6%), 2.2k mt more than June 2024 (+11%), and 1.7k mt greater (+8%) than the five-year average (2019/20–2023/24) for the period. The next data release will cover July 2025, for which the five-year average is 17.5k mt.
The top five export destinations accounted for 47% of the monthly total in June. They included Germany at 3.8k mt, Belgium with 3.1k mt, India with 1.8k mt, China at 1.6k mt, and Spain at 1.5k mt.
For the crop marketing year-to-date (September–June), U.S. exports total 294.3k mt. This is 76.6k mt fewer year-over-year (-21%) compared with the same period last year, but 49.8k mt ahead (+20%) of the five-year average pace. The 2023/24 marketing year was the strongest on record for U.S. pistachio exports, making it a challenging benchmark for comparison. Pistachio production typically follows alternating "on-years" and "off-years," with 2024/25 being an "off-year." Market participants did not expect to match the previous pace, but despite slower exports, global demand is reported to be "incredibly strong" and continues to support prices.
Current USDA balance sheet estimates (last updated in February 2025) project total exports for the 2024/25 marketing year at 360k mt. To achieve this target, U.S. pistachio exporters will need to ship an average of 32.9k mt each month from June through August. By comparison, the average monthly shipments for July–August in the 2019/20–2023/24 crop years were 18.6k mt.
