Growers await size on Mississippi sweet potato crop

Harvest is underway on the sweet potato crop in Mississippi. "Right now, it looks good though we could use a little bit more rainfall–we're actually getting some today to help the potatoes size up," says Lindsey Edmondson at Topashaw Farms Packing.

This follows a later planting this year by about two weeks in Mississippi on sweet potatoes due to heavy rains at planting time. "The potatoes look good–they just need a bit more size and we feel they will size up by the time we get to them," says Edmondson, noting that harvest began on September 1st. That will continue until as late as mid-November, depending on the weather.

Demand continues to rise
As for demand, she says it continues to grow every year for sweet potatoes and is stronger now compared to this time last year. "It's growing. People are becoming more educated about sweet potatoes and learning about the health benefits and more," says Edmondson.

So how is pricing looking? It's holding and there are hopes it will strengthen. "The costs continue to rise and consumers don't fully understand how much goes into growing and farming. It's important for us to just try to keep the market steady to make a profit," notes Edmondson.
