The sweet potato market is entering its annual peak period. "From our cultivation perspective, we see that supply from Egypt is traditionally high during these months, which puts downward pressure on prices. This brings not only challenges but also opportunities," says Bob Wissenburg of Spot.
Seasonal supply as an opportunity
© SPOT"At Spot, we view the current situation not only as price pressure but primarily as a chance to encourage consumers to buy more sweet potatoes. The abundance of products allows us to launch promotions to increase consumption," says Spot's Bob. "If more consumers are introduced to the product now, we will reap the benefits throughout the rest of the year."
Spot combines cultivation in the U.S. with strong partnerships in Egypt. "This allows us to supply sweet potatoes year-round and guarantee consistent quality. The U.S. crop this year is showing good yields per hectare, although with a higher proportion of smaller sizes. Larger sizes are expected to remain scarce and will therefore command higher prices. From November, the first containers will depart from the U.S. for Europe."

Outlook
"Our focus is on building long-term relationships with buyers and developing the category, rather than just playing the day market," says Nick Bakelaar. "By strategically combining the Egyptian season with our U.S. crop, we can provide year-round stability and quality."
