Potatoes, normally considered a staple and affordable option for Australian households, have more than doubled in price over the past four weeks. Shoppers have reported noticeable increases, with both weather conditions and potato mop-top virus contributing to the reduced supply.
According to Anton van den Berg of Box Divvy, washed potatoes are currently selling for around US$1.95 per kilo (AU$3), compared with the usual US$0.78–0.98 per kilo (AU$1.20–1.50). Brushed potatoes are selling for US$0.78–1.10 per kilo (AU$1.20–1.70), up from a normal price of about US$0.65 per kilo (AU$1). Van den Berg noted that supplies from Queensland should begin to enter the market in early October, with some New South Wales crops already trickling in. However, Queensland and New South Wales together account for less than 15 per cent of Australia's potato crop. South Australia, the largest supplier at around 40 per cent, will not begin its new season until December.
Potato mop-top virus has also affected availability. The virus, which does not impact human health, distorts the skin and flesh of potatoes and reduces yields. "As far as I know, the virus has only been detected in Tasmania," said van den Berg. Several mainland states, including New South Wales, have imposed restrictions on Tasmanian potatoes. Tasmania accounts for about one quarter of the national crop, particularly during winter and early spring, making the restrictions further pressure on supply.
Supermarkets have posted notices to inform customers about the situation. Coles noted that some of its potatoes may show more markings than usual, which only affect the skin. Another sign explained that "recent extreme weather across key growing regions" has limited availability of Washed Potatoes 2kg and Creme Gold Potatoes Loose, with some products appearing darker in colour. Coles listed Red Royale Washed Potatoes at US$1.78 per kilo (AU$2.75). Woolworths listed White Washed and Red Washed Potatoes at US$0.54 each (AU$0.85), while Aldi listed White Potatoes at US$1.52 each (AU$2.37).
