UK: Core blimey! One in seven parents eat the entire apple, just leaving the stalk
Tesco reported: "Are you a dipper, a core destroyer, slicer, or one bite wonder? As new research uncovers the nation's 'Apple Archetypes', Tesco re-launches 'Free Fruit for Kids' initiative in store. 61% of respondents will happily munch an apple right down to the core, with one in seven (14%) eating everything but the stalk, 18% love their apples dipped in marmite. Tesco has relaunched its popular Free Fruit for Kids initiative, offering free apples for kids in stores nationwide until the 17th August. Rolling out in large stores, children can pick up a free apple after checkout to enjoy as a healthy snack on the way home".

Just Eat Takeaway reported: "Net cash generated by operating activities increased to €160mln in H1 2025 from €96mln in H1 2024. Net result from continuing operations improved to a loss of €90mln in H1 2025 from a loss of €203mln in H1 2024. New Zealand: Wellington fruit shop to close the doors after 65 years
A fruit shop that has stood the test of time - spanning decades and generations in a coastal Wellington community - is finally closing its doors. Run by the Lai family since the 1960s, residents say the Eastbourne Fruit Supply is a cornerstone of the community - a place where local teenagers "cut their teeth" in part-time jobs, and customers are greeted by name. But after 65 years, its second-generation owners - siblings Tom, Richard and Sandra Lai - say the time has come to say goodbye.

UK: Vegetable boxes for low income households
A charity is offering free vegetable boxes for low income families who struggle to purchase fresh food. Growing Well will donate up to 30 of its weekly boxes for free to households across Mid Copeland in Cumbria. The mental health recovery charity said the areas covered include Thornhill, Haile, Calderbridge, Ponsonby, Beckermet, Seascale and Gosforth and the process is fully confidential. Harvested weekly, each box includes seven different seasonal vegetables which will be delivered to the recipients' doors or can be collected from a nearby collection point.

Holland: Ahold Delhaize reports solid Q2 performance driven by sales growth; 2025 outlook reiterated
Ahold Delhaize reported: "Ahold Delhaize, one of the world's largest food retail groups and a leader in both supermarkets and e-commerce, reports second quarter results. European net sales were €9.9bln, an increase of 13.4% at constant exchange rates and 13.3% at actual exchange rates. The higher net sales were partly due to the Profi acquisition, an increase in comparable sales of 4.9%, and store openings, partially offset by the impact from the conversion of stores in Belgium to affiliates. In Q2, online sales increased 12.7%, driven by double-digit growth at bol and Albert Heijn. U.S. net sales were €13.2bln, an increase of 1.9% at constant exchange rates and down 3.1% at actual exchange rates".

7-Eleven plans 2,300 new branches by 2030
Seven & i Holdings has announced a huge investment in the growth of its convenience chain 7-Eleven: the Japanese company wants to add 1,300 locations in North America and 1,000 in its home country by 2030. CEO Stephen Dacus also confirmed the planned IPO of its North American operations (with the Speedway and Stripes brands in addition to 7-Eleven) to Reuters. That is scheduled for the second half of 2026 and is part of the strategy to accelerate globally.

US: Wakefern Food Corp. to acquire Morton Williams
Wakefern Food Corp. has entered into an agreement to acquire Morton Williams stores in the New York metro area, the retail cooperative announced. Wakefern will retain the Morton Williams name, and a wholly owned subsidiary will operate the 17 stores included in the deal. Fifteen stores are located in Manhattan, one in the Bronx, and one in Jersey City. Kevin McDonnell, president of Wakefern's wholly owned subsidiary PRRC, Inc., will lead Morton Williams. PRRC, Inc. operates stores under the Price Rite Marketplace banner.

US: Ingles Markets' Q3 profits fall 17.4%

US Foods Holding Corp., one of the largest foodservice distributors in the United States, announced results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2025. Second quarter fiscal 2025 highlights: Total case volume increased 0.9%; independent restaurant case volume increased 2.7%. Net sales increased 3.8% to $10.1bln.
