U.S. seeks Supreme Court ruling on tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration will ask the Supreme Court for an expedited ruling on tariffs that a U.S. appeals court found illegal last week.

The ruling on Friday cast doubt on the administration's use of tariffs as an economic policy tool. The appeals court allowed the tariffs to remain in effect through October 14, giving the administration time to file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that his administration will request an expedited decision as early as Wednesday. "Because we need an early decision," he said.

Tariffs have been a central part of Trump's economic agenda. He has credited the policy with generating billions of dollars for the U.S. government. "It's a very important decision, and frankly, if they make the wrong decision, it will be devastating for our country," Trump stated.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday said he was confident the Supreme Court would uphold Trump's use of a 1977 emergency powers law to impose broad tariffs on most trading partners.
