South African Minister of Agriculture Steenhuisen announced five new stone fruit deals with China, covering plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and prunes, to be signed at the G20. These agreements will give farmers access to new buyers and help offset the impact of U.S. tariffs.
At the same time, Steenhuisen is working closely with the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition to keep the U.S. market open. A revised proposal addressing U.S. concerns has been submitted, and key barriers for poultry, blueberries, and pork have already been resolved, with shipments from the U.S. expected to arrive soon.
This two-pronged approach of protecting South Africa's U.S. market share while opening new opportunities in Asia and the Middle East is intended to maintain market access during a period of uncertainty.
Steenhuisen's focus on aligning biosecurity standards, accelerating export certification, and strengthening trade links aims to keep South African farmers globally competitive. The DA commends Minister Steenhuisen's efforts to protect rural livelihoods, secure jobs, and expand markets for South African agriculture.
