Grape tomato supply in Canada is steadily coming in from both Mexico and Florida and looks similar in volume to this time last year. "There is some concern in Mexico because they're talking about water shortages," says Chris Botsis of Botsis Fruits & Vegetables based in Montreal, Canada. "It hasn't really hit yet but January through March is when there will be concerns."
That said, the company is familiar with supply challenges given it's a family-owned one that dates to 2010, though Botsis is quick to note that his dad bought and sold tomatoes as far back as the 1970s. Today the company, which repacks supply in a variety of formats and for private label options and more, has seen tomato trends come a long way.

Developments in demand
"Demand for tomatoes on the vine or beefsteak tomatoes has stagnated a bit while the demand for the snacking varieties is still on the rise," he says. "Grape tomatoes too have pretty much replaced cherry tomatoes. They're a newer item–I don't think they've been around for more than maybe 20 years, but they've rapidly replaced cherry tomatoes as a favourite."
As for pricing? "Last year saw some price fluctuations. It's all predicated on weather so if there are droughts or storms, it can turn on a dime and the pricing changes," says Botsis. The company is working with farmers on contracts to ensure steady supply and pricing and this is attractive to the local chain stores. Last year also saw stronger pricing generally. "What happens then, growers plant more, so I'm expecting this upcoming year to be kind of flat pricing wise."
