The sweet corn deals in Indiana and New York state are currently finishing up and this week, harvest in Bainbridge, Georgia started. That season will last until the second week of November. From sweet corn, the region will transition to broccoli and cabbage programs, which continue through the first of the New Year. "There may even be some overlap between the crops," says Geoff Taft with Pioneer Growers. This year, the company has a bigger broccoli and cabbage program in an effort to offer supply close to year-round. In addition, a partnership was started with a Georgia grower of green beans.
So far, the growing conditions for broccoli and cabbage have been good. The weather was warm during planting, but it will be cold by the time the crops get harvested. "By late November, we'll see temperatures in the 30s, but these two crops are hardy and should do well in the cold," commented Taft.
Transition to Bell Glade, FL
From Bainbridge, production transitions to Bell Glade, Florida. Pioneer's herb and leaf programs in Florida will start some time early November and continue through spring. A selection of products includes parsley, cilantro, endive, escarole, and Romaine lettuce. Broccoli and cabbage production will move from Bainbridge, GA to Bell Glade, FL around the first of the New Year.
