Another innovation from Vivo: Hydroponically grown saffron

Sprout production resumes with an eye on autumn demand

"The summer that has just ended can be described as normal in terms of sales. Generally speaking, tourist resorts along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas absorb most of our production. Summer 2025 confirmed the trend of low consumption," said Andrea Farnedi, CEO of Vivo, an Italian company based in Cesena, Emilia-Romagna, that produces sprouts and microgreens.

"Starting in December, we will produce saffron using a hydroponic system at our facility," announces Farnedi. "We have refined the cultivation technique. After harvesting the pistils, we will dehydrate and sell them at the right time. It will remain a niche product, of course, but it will complement our existing offerings, which are in high demand, especially from restaurants."

Regarding the company's core business of sprouts, Farnedi says, "In addition to the established channels of large-scale retail and the restaurant sector, we are also targeting specialty local shops. Sprouts complement a vegetable-based diet. They have antioxidant properties and promote overall health. They fit well into a balanced diet that emphasizes vegetables."

"We have over 30 types of sprouts available 365 days a year. We hold all the certifications required by national and European markets. We pay special attention to our packaging, and our 150-gram cardboard packaging is fully recyclable. This makes it a great fit for consumers who care about food and the environment."

Finally, Vivo recently became part of the Europfruit group, whose commercial partner is Naturitalia. This partnership will allow Vivo to make investments with the support of a well-established producers' organization."
