Morocco has reached a new milestone in cucumber exports, with shipments to Spain surpassing US$20 million in a single season for the first time. According to EastFruit, Morocco exported 18,200 tons of cucumbers to Spain between July 2024 and June 2025, generating US$21.1 million in revenue. This marked a 34% increase over the previous season and a more than threefold rise compared to 2020/21. Over the past four seasons, Morocco's cucumber exports have grown at an average annual rate of 33%.
Spain remains Morocco's leading export destination for cucumbers, with its share in Morocco's export structure rising considerably. In 2021/22, Spain accounted for 31% of Morocco's cucumber exports; by 2024/25, the share had grown to more than 58%. Demand from Spain has been the main driver of Morocco's overall export expansion.
Moroccan cucumbers are supplied year-round, with peak volumes shipped between December and February. In January 2025 alone, Morocco exported a record 3,500 tons to Spain. During December and January, Moroccan cucumbers made up more than 90% of Spain's total cucumber imports.
Despite being one of the world's largest cucumber producers and exporters, Spain is increasingly reliant on imports to meet external demand. In 2024/25, Spain exported 782,000 tons of cucumbers, up 16% from the previous season, while domestic production remained relatively stable at 700,000–750,000 tons. Morocco's proximity and consistent supply make it Spain's most strategic import partner.
Other European suppliers, including Portugal, Germany, and the Netherlands, also increased cucumber exports to Spain, though their volumes remain well below Morocco's levels.
