Ukraine to fund US$4.9 million vegetable storehouses

The Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine has proposed expanding the program "Granting Grants for the Creation or Development of Business" to include support for building vegetable storehouses. The plan foresees annual spending of UAH200 million (US$4.9 million). The draft resolution has been submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

The explanatory note states: "As of the beginning of 2025, the capacities of vegetable storehouses that have been destroyed and/or damaged, as well as those located in temporarily occupied territories, amount to almost 250 thousand tons. The volume of insufficient capacities of vegetable storehouses exceeds 340 thousand tons."

Expert estimates indicate that vegetable production in Ukraine, specifically the soup set crops of potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, and beets, amounts to about 2.5 to 2.7 million tons. The existing storage capacity for these products remains well below the level required for proper preservation and marketing.

The Ministry of Economy proposes amendments to Resolution No. 738 of 2022, extending it to cover grants for the construction of vegetable storehouses. Funding would cover expenses for materials, equipment, and construction work. The program will apply to new storehouses with a minimum capacity of 3,000 tons for simultaneous storage of vegetables, with the requirement to create at least 12 new jobs. For facilities exceeding 6,000 tons, at least 16 new jobs must be created.

According to ministry calculations, 2,551 companies or individual entrepreneurs may be eligible to apply for grants under the scheme.
