Georgia readies for corn harvest

There is a steady supply of corn volumes right now. "We are harvesting in Virginia and in Ontario and in about 10 days, we will be starting harvest in Georgia," says Robert Reesor of Rouge River Farms, adding that there is also industry production in North Carolina and throughout the Northeast. "Though the Northeast production usually winds down in about the next 15 days."

The transition to production in Georgia looks to begin at the usual time of the year. "The corn crops in Georgia look pretty good at the moment though this is the time of year where storms can come in and really wreak havoc. As of right now though, the crops are looking decent," he says.

Dry growing conditions
So far going into this season, Georgia has seen good growing conditions for corn. However those conditions have been very dry, though growers with good irrigation systems in place likely fared better.

As for demand, it is average and steady for corn. So where is all of this leaving pricing? "It is reflecting the ample supply available. It's not a high market but it's not a terrible market either–it's lower than average for this time of year," says Reesor.
