The supply of asparagus from Peru is starting to pick up as production from the southern part of the country, and also Baja California, increase volumes. "Compared to last year, so far there is about five percent more volume from Ica, Peru," says Carlos Solf, vice president of procurement for Southern Specialties, a grower, importer and processor of fresh asparagus.
In terms of season timing, production looks similar to historical timing and by mid-November, the volume of asparagus should start to come down. "Looking ahead for the next few weeks, we expect good volumes," he adds, noting that the company offers year-round programs with supply coming from other growing regions such as Mexico and Michigan.

Demand and costs
As for the demand for asparagus, it is good right now. "We expect it to increase," says Solf. "Slightly higher costs may impact the demand, somewhat. There will be ad opportunities in October and we expect that to increase demand."
In turn, pricing on asparagus is higher than last year–mainly due to a variety of factors including logistics, increased production costs and tariffs on product being imported into the U.S. "One of the biggest challenges is finding the best balance of bringing customers and consumers value while experiencing cost increases on several levels," adds Solf.
