Fyffes reports 2023–2024 sustainability progress

Fyffes has released its latest biennial Sustainability Report, covering the period 2023 to 2024, outlining progress on environmental, social, and governance targets.

The company reported that all of its own operations are now covered by a certified water management plan. On packaging, 99.6% is recyclable, reusable, or compostable. Fyffes also met its food loss target, repurposing 80% of post-harvest food waste.

Fyffes reported that it has donated over 27 million meals to date, surpassing its target of five million meals for vulnerable communities.

The company conducted an independent climate change risk assessment to evaluate current and future impacts on its growing regions. Reported risks include tropical storms, increased rainfall and heat, and rising pest and fungal pressures.

Fyffes said it reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions in CO2 equivalent per kilogram of fruit harvested by 12.05%, citing initiatives such as switching to lower-nitrogen fertilisers and upgrading agrochemical application equipment. Its targets are aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The company stated it has trained all employees on human rights and introduced similar training for suppliers. Independent human rights impact assessments were conducted at supplier sites in Costa Rica and at Fyffes-owned farms in Belize.

Fyffes noted that its sustainability targets, set for the decade 2020–2030, were conceived in 2019/2020. The current reporting period marks the halfway point in both the UN Sustainable Development Goals timeline and the company's 2030 Sustainability Strategy.

Fyffes has also been shortlisted for the Reuters SDG Pioneer Award and the UK Fresh Awards Sustainability Supply Chain Award.
