The Plátano de Canarias with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) plans to enter the Italian market through a reverse trade mission organized in the archipelago. According to the regional government, this initiative is part of the Plátano de Canarias PGI- Agri-Food-Plantain Sectorial Plan, coordinated by the Foreign Promotion department and Asprocan (Association of Banana Producers' Organizations of the Canary Islands).
The visiting delegation includes representatives from the supermarket chain COOP Italia, the company Fruttital SRL—which will handle the ripening process at the destination—and the ripening operator Hnos. Fernández López, SAU, along with members of Asprocan and Proexca.
The idea originated from the growers' organization Cupalma, which is linked with Asprocan. This organization also has ties to Hnos. Fernández López, SAU, and, by extension, to Fruttital SRL. Due to these business relationships, COOP Italia has shown interest in launching a marketing line for the Canarian banana.
The mission will involve visits to production farms, both conventional and organic, as well as packing facilities and ripening centers. The aim is for Italian buyers to gain direct knowledge of the product's technical details, packaging methods, and distribution channels, with the goal of developing a strategy for market entry and final presentation to consumers.
