Agriculture Minister Mabouba Diagne says banana self-sufficiency is now within reach, driven by recent performance in the sector and improved organization of domestic production. The objective is to reduce dependence on imports while strengthening the role of local producers in the value chain.
By 2025, national production is forecast to reach 112,500 tons. The program is supported by subsidies for vitro-plants and targeted support for cooperatives. These measures are intended to consolidate the production base, improve yields, and promote greater structuring of stakeholders, while keeping production costs under control.
In parallel, measures are being taken to limit post-harvest losses, upgrade storage infrastructure, and improve logistics to streamline distribution across the country. According to the Ministry, these initiatives will reinforce the competitiveness of Senegalese bananas and the sector's ability to supply domestic demand.
If the current trajectory continues, Senegal could achieve self-sufficiency before 2029. This would secure national supply and position the banana sector as a contributor to food autonomy, rural employment, and local economic development.
