World Tristar Cambodia, the largest Cavendish banana plantation in Kampot province, is expanding production to meet demand in both domestic and export markets.
Company representative Heang Menghoung reported that 1,000 hectares have been developed in Trapeang Phleang commune, Chhouk district, of which 700 hectares are currently under harvest. The plantation exports an average of 700 tons of bananas per month, equal to around 35 containers, primarily to China. Smaller volumes are also shipped to South Korea and Vietnam, with domestic sales continuing alongside exports.
The company was established in 2021 and has plans to expand by an additional 150 hectares annually until its total landholding of over 4,000 hectares is in full production. "Bananas from Kampot are highly competitive due to their sweet and fragrant taste," Menghoung said. "We are optimistic that our markets will expand from Asia to Europe in the future."
He added that the current Cambodia–Thailand border dispute has not affected the company's operations or expansion, as China remains the leading export destination and most packaging materials are sourced from there.
According to local authorities, Trapeang Phleang commune hosts two large Cavendish banana plantations: Long Met Plantation with 400 hectares and World Tristar Cambodia with more than 4,000 hectares. Together, these two producers have the capacity to export more than 30,000 tons of bananas annually to China, with volumes expected to increase in the coming years.
