The Chamber of Commerce, Industries, and Agriculture of Panama announced that Chiquita will resume operations in the western province of Bocas del Toro no later than February 2026. The organization described the company's return as a sign of international confidence in Panama and a boost for the regional economy.
Bananas remain Panama's main agricultural export. The sector shipped around 18 million boxes in 2024. The Chamber emphasized that Bocas del Toro is recognized worldwide for its land quality for banana production, noting that the multinational's decision reflects the potential of the province.
Chiquita plans to establish a modern operating model in Bocas del Toro, focusing on sustainability, efficiency, and productivity while aiming to create a positive impact on local communities.
The Chamber highlighted that the success of such investments depends on activities being conducted in compliance with national laws, guaranteeing labor rights, ensuring consistent production, and maintaining investor confidence.
The company suspended operations in Bocas del Toro between May and June 2025 after workers staged an indefinite strike over a pension regulation.
