Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. has partnered with the CMA CGM Group to introduce containerized shipping for banana and pineapple exports from the Philippines to Japan and South Korea. The move replaces traditional breakbulk shipping with containerized logistics aimed at improving cold chain consistency and reducing handling.

The service operates on two main CMA CGM routes:
- The JP8 service offers direct connections from Davao to Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, and Moji in Japan.
- The BMX service provides a weekly connection from Davao to Busan, South Korea.
Breakbulk shipping, used for decades in transporting bananas and pineapples to Japan and Korea, often involves multiple handling stages and exposure to fluctuating temperatures. The new containerized method keeps produce in temperature-controlled conditions from farm to destination, reducing waste and maintaining quality.
CMA CGM uses CLIMACTIVE controlled atmosphere containers and smart container systems designed to slow ripening, preserve nutritional value, and provide real-time monitoring of goods in transit.
Company representatives from both Fresh Del Monte and CMA CGM noted that the containerized approach is expected to improve logistics efficiency and product quality while reducing environmental impact through better capacity use and lower waste.
