U.S. customs seize $1.6 million cocaine in lime shipment

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility intercepted $1.6 million worth of alleged cocaine concealed in a trailer carrying a shipment of limes.

On September 22, CBP officers at the Pharr International Bridge encountered a tractor-trailer attempting entry into the United States from Mexico. The vehicle was hauling a commercial load of limes. The truck was referred for further inspection, which involved non-intrusive inspection equipment, a canine team, and a physical search.

Officers discovered 50 packages containing a total of 125.66 pounds (57 kilograms) of alleged cocaine concealed within the trailer. The narcotics have an estimated street value of $1,677,852.

CBP officers seized both the narcotics and the vehicle. Homeland Security Investigations special agents have opened a criminal investigation into the case.

"This interception illustrates how our frontline CBP officers continue to shut down hard narcotics smuggling attempts using inspection skills, experience, and high-tech tools," said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo Port of Entry.
