Southern Portugal's Algarve citrus sector is preparing a promotional campaign to expand the international reach of the Algarve Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) label in Spain, France, Germany, and Canada, according to AlgarOrange, the regional association of citrus operators.
The first activity will take place in Madrid, where Citrinos do Algarve PGI will be represented at the Fruit Attraction trade fair. Four additional events are planned in the selected foreign markets, alongside three initiatives in the Algarve, through the end of 2026.
"Spain, France, Germany, and Canada are the chosen destinations, not only because they are markets with growth potential for Citrinos do Algarve PGI, but also because they host the largest international trade fairs in the sector, bringing together thousands of potential customers from all over the world," AlgarOrange said.
The campaign aims to strengthen "recognition, notoriety, and international visibility" of the PGI label and to highlight its "quality, differentiation, and added value" for global consumers. AlgarOrange underlined the Algarve's role as Portugal's largest citrus-producing region.
The initiative will be presented under the slogan "Get the taste. Feel the sun." The PGI encompasses oranges, tangerines, clementines, and lemons produced in the Algarve. According to producers, the region's soil and climate contribute to "the right balance between sweetness and acidity" and "high juice content."
"This is a large-scale, ambitious project that will put Algarve Citrus PGI on the international map. We are opening doors in strategic markets and strengthening the competitiveness of companies in the region," said José Oliveira, president of AlgarOrange.
The promotional strategy forms part of the 'Internacionalizar + Algarve 3.0' programme, funded by the European Algarve2030 framework. Co-promoters include NERA – Algarve Region Business Association, AlgarOrange, the Algarve Tourism Association, the Algarve Wine Commission, the Algarve Tourism Region, and the University of the Algarve.
Citrinos do Algarve PGI is cultivated by 15 operators across municipalities, including Albufeira, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé (excluding Ameixial), Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira (excluding Cachopo), and Vila Real de Santo António.
Production of Citrinos do Algarve PGI reached over 64,000 tonnes in the 2023/24 harvest, the highest level in eight years, AlgarOrange reported.
