"One year is never the same as the next. For example, last year we sold ginger for 30 euros per box, and now it's half that. And we see more products that were very expensive last year but now show the opposite picture," says Patrick Stoffels of Stoffels Foods.
"For example, lime prices are very low at the moment. Prices are currently between 4.50 and 5 euros. Hopefully, we'll soon return to market prices of around 8 euros, because right now it only costs money. The quality of Brazilian limes is good. Last week, we received the last limes from Colombia. But after a difficult summer, we're hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel, because prices are extremely low right now."

From China, Stoffels has also started receiving the first pomelos. "The first white pomelos have already arrived, and tomorrow we'll also get the first red pomelos. This is quite early, as most importers won't receive them until next week. For now, sales are going well, but the large volumes still have to come in. Fortunately, the quality looks good," Patrick says.

That prices can just as quickly swing in the other direction is shown by passion fruit. "Those were selling for around 6 euros just last week, and now, within a weekend, prices are between 8 and 10 euros. If slightly fewer containers arrive, the price immediately shoots up," says Patrick, who sells a lot of Ocati passion fruit under the Ocati and Don Jose brands.

For Stoffels Foods, extreme market conditions actually represent an opportunity. "That's the strength of my business. I can rely on a broad supplier base, and if I can work well with a supplier, I like to highlight those products. So I am active in almost every market, from tomatoes to exotics," says Patrick, who looks back on a smooth summer season. "June and July were my best months," he adds.
"In doing so, I have the luxury of carefully selecting suppliers. First of all, on good trade, but also on being pleasant partners, because what's more enjoyable than trading with people you get along with? I try to build a good relationship first and make sure both sides can earn."
