The Himachal Pradesh government is seeking collaboration with New Zealand in apple and pear cultivation, according to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday.
A New Zealand delegation, led by high commissioner Patrick John Rata, met with the chief minister to discuss potential cooperation in horticulture. Sukhu noted that both Himachal Pradesh and New Zealand share similar climatic conditions, creating scope for joint efforts in fruit cultivation.
He stated that New Zealand's horticultural practices, including high-density plantation, orchard management, and pest control, could contribute to improving the productivity and quality of fruit crops in the state. He added that such cooperation could support farmers' incomes, improve post-harvest management, and align with global standards.
The chief minister also said New Zealand's expertise could assist the state in adopting modern, sustainable, and climate-resilient practices in agriculture.
Sukhu pointed out that the Himachal Pradesh government has already introduced measures to support horticulturists, including the rollout of universal cartons aimed at ensuring better pricing for produce.
State horticulture minister Jagat Singh Negi was also present at the meeting.
