Nigerian governors open Taraba State greenhouse farm

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has commended the Taraba State Green House, also referred to locally as the Cucumber Farm, noting its potential role in food security and addressing hunger in the North-east and Nigeria.

Zulum made the remarks during the inauguration of the project at the North-east governors' summit. The forum expressed concern about the possibility of food shortages next year.

A statement by Emmanuel Bello, Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications to Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, described the inauguration in Jalingo as the commissioning of the remodelled Green House Farm. The project, according to Bello, uses technology designed to cultivate vegetables throughout the year regardless of climate conditions.

Bello noted that "Governor Agbu Kefas led the other five governors to commission the remodelled Green House Farm. The locals are fond of calling the vast vegetable plantation the Cucumber Farm, but it is actually one of the best greenhouses in the country. The world-class technology ensures that vegetables are cultivated all year long, irrespective of climatic conditions. Apart from the famous green pepper, the world-class tomatoes here are clearly the best in the market. Healthy, fleshy, and nutritious, experts say Taraba State has invariably become the headquarters of vegetables in the country."

He added that Ohad Shtilman and Eyal Tal, working with a team from TSI, are leading the technical operations of the greenhouse. The group had previously faced setbacks with the project but has since taken measures to address gaps and ensure continuity.

According to Bello, demand from buyers and sellers is rising as the greenhouse begins operations, with investors also showing interest in the project.

Alongside Kefas and Zulum, four other governors of the North-east attended the inauguration: Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Bala Muhammed of Bauchi, Yahaya Inuwa of Gombe, and Mai Mala Buni of Yobe.
