Álvaro González-Escalada, general manager at Logista Freight:

"We introduced electric tractors, convinced that they will continue to improve in the future"

In recent years, Spain has positioned itself as a preferential supplier of fruit and vegetable products in the continental market. There are many challenges linked to sustainability, such as the lack of drivers or the concentration of activity in large groups. In 2024, after the acquisition of 100% of El Mosca, an emblematic transport company from Murcia, Logista has been strengthening its position as a leader in integrated logistics in Europe.

It's impossible to make an accurate prediction of the situation of transport in a few years' time without taking sustainability into account. The strongest companies in the sector have already started integrating new ways of working. "As part of our plan to reduce our carbon footprint, more than two years ago, we introduced electric tractors in some services and set up our own charging stations that allow ultra-fast charging," says Álvaro González-Escalada, general manager at Logista Freight.

"Although their use remains limited to local or regional routes due to the autonomy of the batteries and the necessary investment in vehicles and infrastructure, we are still betting on this solution as part of our commitment to sustainability. We are including electric tractors in the belief that they will continue to improve in the future," he says.

"We have a fleet of more than 2,500 vehicles, which allows us to meet the needs of all vertical markets, including the fruit and vegetable sector, one of the main sectors in which we specialize. We have vehicles of different capacities, with constant renewal that guarantees operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and reduced emissions," says González-Escalada.

Among the most remarkable events and changes of the 2024/2025 campaign, "We unfortunately cannot forget the terrible floods and storms suffered in Valencia, which also caused great havoc in transport planning."

"Due to the damage suffered by many warehouses in the area, it became urgent to seek alternative routes and solutions. During those weeks, thanks to the joint efforts with customers and operational teams, specific action plans were drawn up that not only helped salvage the campaign, but also allowed us to learn key lessons for dealing with future incidents," says the manager.

As far as the Mediterranean Corridor is concerned, González-Escalada says that "it will give a key boost to logistics and the transport of goods between Spain and Europe, thereby improving the competitiveness of the fruit and vegetable growing and exporting sector. This infrastructure will provide added value, generate quality employment in logistics, and contribute to a more sustainable supply chain thanks to the reduction of emissions."

"At Logista Freight, we've been committed for years to intermodal solutions, working closely with customers who demand such efficient and responsible services. The fact is that sustainability and efficiency cannot be ignored when reorganizing transportation," says the executive.

In general terms, "we have closed a very positive campaign with constant and stable volumes. The trust placed in us by our customers has allowed us not only to meet all the demand, but also to launch new projects and expand our portfolio of services and routes," says the manager.
