The apple season in India is in transition, with harvests in Himachal Pradesh nearing completion and the Kashmir season just beginning, says Bijesh Thelakkatt, CEO of fresh fruit importer PJJ International Fruits. "The quality and volume of the domestic apple crop have been excellent this year. At the same time, the market has a good stock of imported varieties such as Royal Gala, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith."
Thelakkat mentions that the main varieties imported by PJJ International Fruits include Red Delicious, Royal Gala, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith apples, which are very popular in the Indian market. "We also import other selections like Braeburn, Fuji, Queen, Snow, Cosmic, and Magic Star to cater to unique consumer preferences in metro cities."

According to Thelakkat, Pink Lady apples have enjoyed higher demand this year, which he attributes to their longer shelf life, attractive appearance, firmness, and year-round availability. Price-wise, the current season has seen a notable rise compared to last year. "Prices have gone up by at least 10%, primarily driven by fluctuations in the international currency markets and the falling rupee," Thelakkatt explains.
As per initial harvest reports, Thelakkat highlights that " while a clear evaluation of quality across sources is still pending, the USA and Poland are expecting bumper crops this season, which will ensure strong supplies. However, Turkey's harvest challenges are likely to impact volumes and push prices upward."

Looking ahead, Thelakkatt mentions, "Fresh shipments of Gala apples from Turkey, Poland, the USA, and Serbia will soon start arriving. The market is shaping up well, and buyers can expect a steady mix of quality domestic apples alongside fresh imports, keeping apple availability stable and diverse for the weeks ahead."
