U.S. potatoes move to recycled plastic packaging

Emerald Packaging, together with Idaho Package, Wada Farms, and Walmart, has introduced a potato bag containing 30% food contact post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. It is the first of its kind for the potato category in the United States.

The initiative was developed in line with Walmart's Project Gigaton, which aims to reduce or avoid one billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions across its global supply chain by 2030. Wada Farms worked with Walmart to bring the PCR bag to market.

Idaho Package and Wada Farms began testing the PCR bags in autumn 2024, with commercial rollout later the same year. By mid-2025, more than a dozen potato SKUs at Walmart incorporated PCR resin. According to the companies, the use of recycled resin has replaced more than 100,000 pounds of virgin polyethylene plastic. Walmart is continuing the process of shifting additional root vegetable packaging into PCR.

Company representatives stated that the new bag maintains required product performance standards and was introduced with minimal cost impact.

The partners note that the adoption of PCR packaging responds to both retailer goals and broader industry expectations for reducing plastic waste.
